The Difference Between Account Types

There is a meaningful difference between signing in to Windows itself with a Microsoft account and just signing in to individual apps like Office or Xbox with one. The phrasing in Windows setup blurs that distinction, but the consequences are very different.

When you sign in to Windows with a Microsoft account, several things happen at once:

• The PC is registered to that Microsoft account in the cloud.
• Settings, themes, and credentials sync across all your Windows devices.
• BitLocker drive encryption is enabled silently on most modern PCs.
• OneDrive sync is enabled and your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders get redirected.

The BitLocker Trap

From Windows 11 24H2 onwards, BitLocker is automatically enabled on most modern PCs at first sign-in if a Microsoft account is used. Encryption itself is good — a stolen laptop with BitLocker is essentially a brick to the thief — but the implementation has a quiet failure mode that bites real people every week.

Here is the problem: most users do not know their drive is encrypted, do not know they have a BitLocker recovery key, and would not know where to find it. The key is uploaded to the Microsoft account that was used during setup. If that account is forgotten, locked, or was created by someone else (a family member, a shop, the original owner of a refurbished PC), the data is unrecoverable.

The OneDrive Folder-Redirect Problem

OneDrive sync is the second feature that gets switched on by default with a Microsoft account. The marketing phrasing is “Back up your files” but what actually happens is your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders are physically moved from C:\Users\<you>\Documents into C:\Users\<you>\OneDrive\Documents and replaced with redirected shortcuts.

That breaks any program that hard-codes paths to those folders. The most common casualty I have seen in the shop is Outlook Classic, which keeps its data files (.pst / .ost) in C:\Users\<you>\Documents\Outlook Files. After a OneDrive sync, those files are gone from where Outlook expects them, send/receive errors stack up, and even pointing Outlook at the new location often does not fix it because OneDrive’s “file in use” locking conflicts with Outlook’s exclusive access.

The fix in that scenario is to move the Outlook data folder out of OneDrive’s reach (back to C:\Users\<you>\ or another location entirely) and reconfigure the Outlook profile to point at the new path. Most users are not equipped to do that themselves.

The free OneDrive plan also only includes 5 GB of storage. If you sign in on an existing PC that already has 20 GB of files, OneDrive starts uploading everything immediately and quickly nags you to buy more storage — exactly the friction-driven upsell that makes the feature feel hostile.

Most of the time Windows caches credentials so you can still log in without internet, but I have seen cases — especially after a major Windows update or a long offline period — where the cached credential expires and the user is stuck at the login screen until they get back online. That is a non-issue if you are at home with WiFi; it is a real problem if you are on a flight, in a hotel with broken WiFi, or in a power-outage scenario where the router is down.

The other failure mode is the Microsoft account itself. If the account gets flagged, locked, or you forget the password and the recovery options also fail, you can lose access to the PC entirely. Local accounts are not immune to forgotten passwords, but recovery is straightforward — boot from a Windows USB, run a password reset tool, and you are in.

Create Custom Windows Installation Media

This is honestly one of my favorite features of Winhance. The Advanced Tools section includes two powerful utilities:

Autounattend XML Generator:
Winhance can generate an auto unattend XML file (also known as an answer file) based on your current settings. This XML file can be added to a Windows installation ISO, and it will automatically apply your Winhance settings during the Windows installation process.

That means when you install Windows, the bloatware gets removed automatically, your privacy settings are applied automatically, your customizations are applied automatically, and everything is set up exactly how you want it without you having to do anything after installation.

WimUtil (Windows Installation Media Utility):
WimUtil takes things even further. It lets you:

1. Select an official Windows 10 or Windows 11 ISO file
2. Add your auto unattend XML file to it
3. Extract and add system drivers to it
4. Create a new custom ISO file that’s ready to use

The core process is exactly the same—download Winhance, import the recommended config file, and let it apply all the privacy, performance, and customization settings. But Windows 10 has a few unique advantages that I personally loved before switching to Windows 11.

Windows 10-Specific Features

Transparent Taskbar (Native Support)

One of my favorite things about Windows 10 is the ability to make the taskbar transparent with a simple registry entry. No third-party apps needed. Winhance includes this as a simple toggle in the customization screen.

On Windows 11, Microsoft removed this native functionality. You can still get a transparent taskbar with third-party apps like Translucent TB, Windhawk, or StartAllBack, but I liked the fact that it could be done without installing additional software on Windows 10.

Movable Taskbar Position

Another feature that’s been removed in the latest versions of Windows 11 is the ability to move the taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen. On Windows 10, you can simply right-click the taskbar, unlock it, and drag it to wherever you want it.

I personally prefer the taskbar at the top because browser tabs are at the top. So if I want to navigate to something on the taskbar, it’s right there. It’s just more convenient for me this way, but that’s personal preference.

Note: On Windows 11, I now use StartAllBack to move the taskbar to the top and make it transparent, but it requires a paid third-party app.

Small Taskbar Option

Windows 10 also lets you use a smaller taskbar, which gives you more vertical screen space. Combined with the transparent effect and top positioning, it creates a really clean, minimal setup that I used for years before switching to Windows 11.

How to Revert Winhance Changes (Undo Everything)

So I’ve seen quite a few comments asking how you can revert the changes that were made by Winhance and basically take your computer back to the state it was in before you ran Winhance. The good news? Winhance has built-in protection systems that make this pretty straightforward.

In this section, I’ll walk you through exactly how to undo everything Winhance does to your system, what gets restored automatically, and what you’ll need to handle manually.

Understanding Winhance’s Backup System

Whenever you run Winhance for the first time on your computer, you’ll get a screen that says “Winhance has protected your system with backups.” This is actually a really important safeguard that I built into the app.

Here’s what happens automatically:

• System Restore Gets Enabled: If system restore was disabled on your computer, Winhance will enable it automatically.
• Registry Backups Created: Three registry backups for three different hives are created and saved to C:\ProgramData\Winhance\backups.
• Restore Point Created: A system restore point called “Winhance initial restore point” is created before any changes are made.

The important thing to understand here is that these backups are only created once—the first time you run Winhance. So if you’re planning to revert, you’ll be going back to that initial state before Winhance made any changes.

Important Note: System restore won’t restore your removed apps. You’ll need to reinstall those manually if you want them back. I’ll show you how to do that below.

Important — Custom Windows Installations: The system restore process described below assumes you ran Winhance on a standard, stock Windows installation. If you installed Windows using an autounattend.xml file generated by Winhance (or UnattendedWinstall), your Windows was already debloated and optimized from the beginning — that was never a stock setup. In this case, the “Winhance initial restore point” will take you back to that pre-configured state, not to Microsoft’s default Windows settings.

Step-by-Step: How to Revert Winhance Changes

Let me walk you through the entire process. I recently tested this on a fresh Windows 11 25H2 install where I applied the Winhance recommended config, and then reverted everything back. Here’s exactly how to do it:

Step 1: Open System Restore

First, you’ll need to access the System Restore utility:

1. Type “system restore” in the Windows search bar
2. Click on “Create a restore point” from the search results
3. This will open the System Properties window

Step 2: Launch System Restore

In the System Properties window:

1. Click the “System Restore…” button at the top of the window
2. If you see a welcome screen, click “Next”
3. You should now see a list of available restore points

What Gets Restored (And What Doesn’t)

After the system restore completes and your computer boots back up, here’s what you can expect:

What System Restore DOES Revert:

• All Registry Changes: Any modifications Winhance made to the Windows registry are completely reverted
• Windows Settings: Privacy settings, notifications, and other system settings go back to default
• Theme Settings: Your Windows theme reverts to what it was before (usually light theme on fresh installs)
• Power Plans: Custom Winhance power plans are removed, and default Windows power plans are restored
• Microsoft Edge: If you removed Edge with Winhance, it gets reinstalled automatically
• OneDrive: If you removed OneDrive, it also gets reinstalled
• Scheduled Tasks: Any removal scripts that were scheduled are deleted

What System Restore DOESN’T Restore:

• Built-in Windows Apps: Apps like Photos, Calculator, Phone Link, Xbox, etc. remain removed
• Start Menu Pins: Any apps that were pinned to your Start menu will need to be re-pinned
• Wallpaper: In my testing, the wallpaper didn’t always change back automatically (though this is easy to fix manually)

Manually Reinstalling Removed Apps

Since system restore doesn’t bring back the Windows apps that were removed, you’ll need to reinstall any that you actually want. The good news is you can use Winhance itself to do this, or you can do it manually.

Option 1: Reinstall Apps with Winhance

The easiest way is to just use Winhance’s app management section:

1. Open Winhance
2. Go to the Apps section
3. Find the app you want to reinstall (for example, Phone Link)
4. Click “Install”
5. Winhance will download and install it via WinGet from the Microsoft Store

Keep in mind that some apps can’t be reinstalled, and you’ll see an indicator next to them in Winhance. These include:

• Office Hub
• Cortana
• Paint 3D
• Tips
• Skype
• Windows capabilities like Internet Explorer, WordPad, and Quick Assist

Option 2: Reinstall from Microsoft Store

You can also reinstall most apps manually:

• Via the Microsoft Store App: Open the Microsoft Store and search for the app
• Via Microsoft Store Website: Visit the Microsoft Store website—you don’t even need the Store app installed to download apps this way
• Via WinGet: If you’re comfortable with command line, you can use WinGet commands directly

One More Thing: Deleting Removal Scripts

Here’s something that caught me during testing: While system restore deletes the scheduled tasks that Winhance creates for continuous app removal, it doesn’t delete the actual script files associated with those tasks. These scripts are harmless since they’re not scheduled to run anymore, but you might as well clean them up.

To delete these scripts:

1. Open Winhance
2. Click the “Help” button (usually in the top-right area)
3. You’ll see icons lit up indicating which removal scripts are still present:
   • Edge removal script
   • OneDrive removal script
   • Bloat removal script (for other Windows apps)
4. Click on each lit-up icon and delete the associated script

Once you’ve done this, all traces of the removal scripts are gone.

What if I want to reinstall an app that Winhance removed?

Easy. Winhance will reinstall the app (using WinGet or the Microsoft Store) and automatically delete the removal scripts so the app won’t be removed again. The tool is flexible—you’re always in control.

Will system restore take me back to default Windows if I installed Windows using a Winhance autounattend file?

No, it won’t. Here’s why: The system restore point that Winhance creates captures the state of your system before Winhance runs. If you installed Windows using a custom autounattend.xml file generated by Winhance (or UnattendedWinstall), then your Windows was already debloated and optimized during the installation process—that was never a “default” Windows to begin with.

When you use system restore in this scenario, you’ll go back to the state your computer was in immediately after that custom Windows installation completed. This means you’ll revert to whatever settings and configurations were applied by the autounattend file, not Microsoft’s stock Windows defaults.

Think of it this way: The restore point is like a snapshot taken at a specific moment in time. If that moment was right after a pre-debloated Windows install, that’s what you’ll get back. The system restore feature doesn’t know or care what “default Windows” looks like—it just restores your system to the exact state it was in when the restore point was created.

Microsoft designed this feature for corporate environments to make mass deployments easier, but it works just as well for individual users who want a clean, debloated system without manual post-install tweaking.

The project has over 5,700 stars on GitHub and the launch video has over 1 million views — it clearly hit a nerve with people who are tired of the stock Windows experience. My motivation was to get an LTSC-like experience on the Pro and Home editions of Windows without needing an LTSC license.

What the Answer File Does

The answer file executes commands during three phases of Windows Setup:

• Windows PE (Pre-Installation) — Bypasses hardware requirements (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, RAM, CPU, and storage checks) so you can install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware.
• Specialize Phase (First Boot) — This is where most of the work happens. Registry tweaks, PowerShell scripts, bloatware removal, telemetry disabling, and service optimization all run here. It includes some of the same scripts from the Chris Titus Tech Windows Utility.
• OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience) — Skips the Microsoft Account prompts, allows local account creation, and applies user-specific registry values. Some registry entries from the Specialize phase get reset when a new user profile loads, so this phase re-applies them.

During installation, you will see command prompt and PowerShell windows flash briefly — that is the answer file running its scripts. Leave the computer alone and let it finish. Your PC will restart a couple of times before reaching the desktop.

Why Use an Answer File Instead of a Custom ISO?

The answer file is added to the official Windows ISO downloaded directly from Microsoft — the Windows image itself is not modified. This means you can inspect every change before installation by reading the XML file, you are not downloading a custom ISO from an unknown source, and the process uses an official Microsoft feature designed for exactly this purpose. You can also edit the file to add or remove specific tweaks before using it.

Tip: The answer file is intentionally aggressive — it removes almost everything except Windows Security. The idea is to start with a blank canvas and add back what you need, rather than trying to remove things one by one. If you want to keep something (like Notepad or the Calculator), open the XML in a text editor, search for that entry with Ctrl+F, and delete the lines that remove it.

Method 1: Winhance WIMUtil (Recommended)

The best way to use UnattendedWinstall is through Winhance‘s WIMUtil feature. This creates a custom Windows ISO with the answer file embedded, and it also lets you inject system drivers into the image — which means Windows will detect all your hardware on first boot without needing to manually install drivers afterward.

1. Open Winhance and navigate to Advanced Tools > WIMUtil
2. In Step 1, select and extract a Windows ISO file
3. In Step 2, click “Download UnattendedWinstall XML” to automatically download the latest version from GitHub (or generate a custom Winhance XML with your exact selections)
4. Extract and add your system drivers to the image
5. Create the new ISO file
6. Copy the ISO to a Ventoy flash drive and boot from it to install

Method 2: AnyBurn Custom ISO

If you want a simple approach without Winhance, you can embed the answer file directly into a Windows ISO using AnyBurn (free):

1. Download the autounattend.xml from the UnattendedWinstall GitHub page
2. Download your preferred Windows ISO from Microsoft (Windows 11 or Windows 10)
3. Open AnyBurn and select “Edit Image File”
4. Select the Windows ISO, click Add, and add the autounattend.xml file to the root
5. Click Next > Create Now and overwrite the original ISO when prompted
6. Use this modified ISO to install Windows — either via Ventoy, Rufus, or a virtual machine

Method 3: USB Root Directory

The simplest method if you already have a bootable Windows USB drive:

1. Create a bootable Windows USB using Rufus or the Media Creation Tool
2. Download the autounattend.xml from the UnattendedWinstall GitHub page
3. Copy the XML file to the root of the USB drive (alongside the setup.exe and other files)
4. Boot from the USB and install Windows normally — the answer file is detected and applied automatically

Warning: If you use Rufus, do NOT check any of the boxes in the “Customize Your Windows Experience” dialog — those create a separate answer file that will conflict with UnattendedWinstall. Leave all Rufus customization options unchecked.

Method 4: Ventoy Auto Install Plugin

If you use Ventoy and keep multiple Windows ISOs on the same drive, you can set up the Auto Install Plugin to automatically associate answer files with specific ISOs. Create a folder structure like ISO\Windows\ for your ISOs and Templates\ for your XML files, then configure Ventoy’s plugin to link them. This is the most advanced method but saves time if you frequently install different Windows versions.

What to Expect During Installation

When you boot from the installation media, command prompt windows will flash briefly before the first setup screen — that is the Windows PE phase bypassing hardware requirements. Proceed through the normal installation prompts (select drive, choose edition, etc.).

After the initial file copy and reboot, you will see more PowerShell and command prompt windows during the Specialize phase. This is where the bulk of the debloating and optimization scripts run. Do not interrupt this — let it finish. Your computer will restart once or twice more.

During the OOBE phase, you will be prompted to create a local account (no Microsoft Account required). Select your region, keyboard layout, and username. After the final reboot, a script runs one more time to apply user-specific registry values, and then you are at the desktop.

The result is a clean Windows installation with no Edge, no OneDrive, no bloatware in the Start menu, telemetry disabled, and a significantly lower background process count. Since there is no browser installed, use the “Install Winhance” shortcut on the desktop to launch Winhance and install your browser and any other software you need.

How to Customize the Answer File

The answer file is intentionally over-tweaked — it removes almost everything. You can edit it before adding it to your installation media to keep specific features or apps.

Open autounattend.xml in any text editor (VS Code, Notepad++, or even the default Notepad). Use Ctrl+F to search for the name of whatever you want to keep — for example, searching “notepad” will show you the entries that remove it. Delete those lines and save the file.

Can I undo the changes after installation?
